Ask around town when the holiday lights come on and most answers will name the Friday after Thanksgiving. That's the night of the parade, the carols, the fireworks and the countdown on the Resort lawn. This year it falls on November 27, and the Downtown Association says that at the end of the show "the switch is flipped and over 1.5 million lights brighten the downtown area."
On the lake, the season starts two weeks earlier. Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises begins its North Pole sailings on November 13, 2026, and the cruise company describes those boats as sailing through "1.5 million sparkling lights" on their way to Santa's floating village. The Resort's own holiday page calls those early nights "the same" experience, with "same lights, same Santa, same MAGIC," and advertises them at 25% off.
So the Lighting Ceremony is a celebration in the middle of the season. The first chance to see the lights from the water comes on a Friday in mid-November, at a lower price and with fewer people on the boat.
Thirteen Nights Before Thanksgiving
The cruise company calls the early stretch Santa's Sneak Peek Week, though it covers thirteen nights, November 13 through November 25. Regular pricing starts November 26. That's Thanksgiving, the night before the parade.
This isn't new. Visit Coeur d'Alene listed last year's Resort light show season as running from November 17, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The 2025 parade wasn't until November 28. In between, a Coeur d'Alene Press photographer rode a Tuesday-night cruise and came back with pictures of Santa checking the Nice List and fireworks bursting over the North Pole, ten days before the official countdown.
This year the early window is longer. Last season it ran eleven nights before the parade. In 2026 it's fourteen, counting Thanksgiving night, and thirteen of those come at the discounted fare.
What the Discount Works Out To
The cruise company posts its Sneak Peek fares with taxes and fees already included and shows the regular price crossed out beside each one.
| Ticket | Nov. 13–25 | Nov. 26–Jan. 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | $23.50 | $30.50 |
| Senior, 55 and up | $22.75 | $29.50 |
| Youth, 6 to 12 | $12.00 | $15.00 |
| Children 5 and under | Free | Free |
The company bills these as 25% savings. Measured against the crossed-out prices, the posted fares come to about 23% off for adults and seniors and 20% off for youth tickets. For two adults and two kids between 6 and 12, that's $71 before Thanksgiving and $91 after. The $20 difference covers a round of hot chocolate downtown afterward. The fine print says the Sneak Peek discount can't be combined with other offers.
The Resort has its own offer on the same dates. Its Countdown to Christmas package includes two adult and two children's cruise tickets for guests who stay between November 13 and November 25. If you have family coming to town before Thanksgiving, that window lines up with the cheapest stretch of the cruise season.
The Schedule, Night by Night
Each cruise runs 40 minutes. During Sneak Peek Week the boats leave at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., with boarding half an hour before each departure. Saturday, November 21, has three extra departures on the ticket calendar, at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. That makes it the busiest night of the discounted stretch and the one most likely to fill up.
Check-in is inside the Resort Plaza Shops at 115 S. 2nd Street, not at the dock. Guests are walked to the marina as a group, so give yourself the full 30 minutes. Reservations are required. The company also says holiday cruises often sell out quickly, so buying tickets ahead matters more than picking the perfect night.
The sailings go past displays that include fire-breathing dragons and tunnels of lights, then reach Santa's floating North Pole Village with its 60-foot LED Christmas tree. Mrs. Claus, the elves and the Grinch are there, and Santa reads each child's name from the Nice List. Fireworks close out the cruise.
About That "New North Pole"
The Resort's 2026 copy invites riders to get "a sneak peek at Santa's NEW North Pole before others see it," but doesn't say what's different this year. The last major redesign that made the news came in 2023, and the name was already in use then. That year the Coeur d'Alene Press quoted the cruise general manager calling "Santa's New North Pole and lamp house feature" a "true labor of love" for the team. The Press reported that Santa's new workshop sat on the Chinook, a 53-by-23-foot barge built that same year. The Spokesman-Review described the Santa House as an all-glass structure with a lamp-house feel and plenty of lighting and sound effects. It also reported that putting Santa on a barge made a bigger experience possible than the old stationary setup.
Whatever has changed for 2026, the Sneak Peek riders will see it first. That's the selling point of the early window, and the Resort is betting on locals to fill those boats.
The Scale Behind a 40-Minute Ride
Last November the Coeur d'Alene Press put the show at 1.5 million lights and 250 displays. The same story reported that Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises had been running North Pole trips for 29 years, which makes this winter the 30th season. Part of that tradition is Silver Belle, the elf played by Mica Riendeau, who greets passengers with candy canes and jingle bells. As of last season she had been doing it for seven years.
"It's really gratifying to see the pure happiness on the faces of the kids," Riendeau told the Press.
Back in 2012, the Press reported that 15 Resort employees spent eight weeks putting the displays up, with more than five miles of wiring. Those numbers are more than a decade old, but they show how much work happens before the first boat leaves.
Then Downtown Takes Over
After Thanksgiving, the season moves from the water onto Sherman Avenue. Here's the published order:
- November 26, Thanksgiving. Regular cruise pricing begins. Departures continue nightly through January 3, 2027.
- November 27, 5 p.m. The 34th Annual Lighting Ceremony Parade, presented by STCU, starts at 8th and Sherman and heads west to Government Way and Northwest Boulevard. Carols, a fireworks show from the Hagadone Corporation and the downtown lighting follow on the Resort lawn. STCU takes over as presenting sponsor this year. Visit Coeur d'Alene listed ICCU in that role for the 33rd parade.
- November 27 to December 20. The Coeur d'Alene Christmas Show, "My Favorite Things," runs Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. and weekends at 5 p.m. It stars the Shotwell Family, and this year it weaves in one story chosen from the community's own Coeur d'Alene Christmas memories. The show is recommended for ages 6 and up.
- November 28 to December 20. The Downtown Association's Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt runs through downtown shops.
- December 5. Free Santa photos at the STCU downtown branch, with a low-sensory slot from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
- December 13, 9 a.m. to noon. Breakfast with Santa at the Hagadone Event Center. Tickets are $75 for ages 13 and up and $45 for kids 12 and under, plus tax and fees.
The Downtown Association lists this year's parade from 5 to 6 p.m., with the fireworks and lighting right after. Last year's listing gave a longer evening. Both pages are live event listings, so check them again the week of the parade.
How the Two Halves Fit Together
The two parts of the season ask different things of you. The parade night is free, it's on foot, and it brings the whole town onto one stretch of Sherman at the same hour. The North Pole cruises are ticketed, seated and spread across four or more departures a night for seven weeks. By the time the parade crowd counts down on November 27, the boats have already made two weeks of trips past the lit shoreline.
If you've only ever seen the lights after the parade, plan for November 13 through 25 this year. The Sneak Peek Week tickets are on the Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises site, and the Saturday, November 21 sailings are the ones to book first.
Part of what makes the lake beautiful in December is the homes along the shore, glowing behind the displays. If you own one of those waterfront properties and wonder what it's worth heading into a new year, Kate & Chris Neu are glad to talk it through.
